New book: AI tools for public relations

The book features insights from 20 experts on leveraging large language models, AI productivity tools, and integrated AI platforms to help practitioners work smarter.

I’ve launched a new book today about artificial intelligence (AI) tools for public relations. It has been published by #FuturePRoof and follows the crowdsourced format and learning design of previous projects.

The practical handbook has its roots in the #PRstack community that Frederik Vincx and I developed. The community published two guides to tools in public relations and has been inactive since 2015.

#PRstack: AI tools for marketing, media, and public relations features insights from 20 practitioners and vendors on the latest AI technologies and tools and their practical application to help public relations practitioners work smarter and more effectively.

It is organised into three intuitive sections.

Large Language Models

The first section covers large language models including Claude, ChatGPT, and the open-source LLaMA 2. It explores how they can be used in generative and reductive productivity-boosting applications, from writing and pattern recognition to summarising large documents.

  • Claude - Andrew Bruce Smith

  • ChatGPT - Ben Lowndes

  • LLaMA 2 - Laura Richards

AI productivity tools

The second section showcases AI-powered productivity tools including Fireflies, Otter.ai and Overtone, modernising activities such as transcription, media monitoring, and coverage analysis.

It also explores innovative image generation tools such as DALL-E, MidJourney and Stable Diffusion, changing how visual content is created, producing designs and images from simple text prompts.

  • Bing Image Creator - Claire Simpson

  • Image generative AI - Laura Richards

  • Canva - Lynnea Olivarez

  • Fireflies - Ann-Marie Blake

  • Otter.ai - Tom Bestwick

  • Overtone - Christopher Brennan

  • Jasper - Cherise Glymph

  • Anyword - Claire Simpson

  • Copy.ai - Erin Lovett

  • Wordtune - Ali Yaseen

  • Taskade - Philippe Borremans

  • GPT for Sheets - Paul Stollery

  • Advanced Data Analysis plug-in - James Crawford

Integrated AI public relations platforms

Finally, the practical handbook examines advanced integrated public relations platforms, including BuzzSumo, PRophet, Prowly, OnePitch, and Propel, which leverage AI to improve media relations through pitching, measurement, and reporting.

  • BuzzSumo - Louise Linehan

  • PRophet - Aaron Kwittken

  • Prowly - Aleksandra Kubicka

  • OnePitch - Sarah Pekala

  • Propel - Zach Cutler

The book consists of 21 chapters and 120 pages. It has taken three months to produce from idea to manuscript, layout and publication. We’ve pushed the limit of the publishing process while maintaining quality.

Writing a book about a fast-moving area of technology has challenges. Claude has increased its context window and ChatGPT has launched personal GPTs since we locked down the manuscript two weeks ago.

There is also an ongoing tension between large language models and third-party developers. We have seen solutions built on top of the AI models such as chatbots, editing, text-generation and summarisation tools, be cannibalised by subsequent generations of AI large language models.

The book focuses on the benefits of new AI tools but highlights the need for human skills in areas such as emotional intelligence, ethics, and relationship building. It also carries a heavy duty disclaimer about data privacy, security and fact-checking.

Thank you to the community

My thanks to the following people for their contribution this project: Ann-Marie Blake, Philippe Borremans, Christopher Brennan, Scott Brinker, Tom Bestwick, James Crawford, Eitan Goldstein, Cherise Glymph, Professor Emeritus Anne Gregory, Aleksandra Kubicka, Ben Lowndes, Louise Linehan, Erin Lovett, Tara Maupai, Lynnea Olivarez, Sarah Pekala, Adam Pointer, Laura Richards, Claire Simpson, Paul Stollery, Andrew Bruce Smith, Dr Swati Virmani, Jean Valin and Ali Yaseen.

The contributors all responded to a blog post in late August. They have tolerated my chasing and cajoling to provide content and feedback on the manuscript. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

You can buy a copy of #PRstack: AI tools for marketing, media, and public relations from Amazon in Kindle and print formats. The Kindle version doesn’t include images as the platform no longer supports them.
