The characteristics of the main social networks

In What the Plus! Google+ for the Rest of Us Guy Kawasaki summarises the characteristics of individual social networks in a single table. It’s a useful primer for anyone new to social networks and an aide memoir for even the most experienced social media user.

If you haven’t created a social network before starting out is daunting. If I had to start building a personal network today I’d head to Google+ because of its proven integration with Google search, or Twitter because engagement and gratification come quickly.

In the best tradition of sharing and remixing the social web I have unashamedly nabbed the best bits of Kawasaki’s table and used it as the inspiration for my own below. Kawasaki examines Facebook, Google+, Pinterest and Twitter. I’ve switched Pinterest for LinkedIn to capture what I believe are the four main social networks.

    • Maybe but I’ve always thought of Pinterest as less of a network and more of a curation tool like Tumblr.

  1. Good point & me too but thinking of it as a network makes it easier for me to approach as a business tool, if that makes sense – think it’s the same for others also
